DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

Oil on panel, 51.5 x 42 cm (each panel).

The four panels painted by Francesco Vanni originally formed a single group intended to adorn the bier of the Company of Blessed Ambrogio Sansedoni, serving as the headboard and footboard. All four were painted by Francesco Vanni in 1584, upon his return from Rome, where he had stayed to complete his training.

In 1758, the bier was dismantled and the panels cut to form several small rectangular panels. The entire group was acquired by the Company's treasurer, Rutilio Sansedoni [1], himself a descendant of Blessed Ambrogio Sansedoni.

The four panels:

Blessed Ambrogio Sansedoni before the Pope,
Christ in Pietà, supported by the Virgin,
Raising of Lazarus,
Saint Bartholomew and Blessed Ambrogio Sansedoni offering the city of Siena to the Madonna.
