Current location: Basilica di San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi
Original location: Basilica di San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This painting represents one of the highest points of the artist's artistic maturity, strongly influenced by the innovations of 17th-century painting.
Around 1620, Rutilio Manetti's style changed radically. He abandoned the old Sienese painting tradition and moved closer to Caravaggio's realism.
The Nativity of Mary is a perfect example of this shift. The painter uses strong contrasts between light and shadow. This gives volume to the bodies and creates an intimate, theatrical atmosphere.
The scene depicts the moment following the birth of the Virgin Mary. At the center are the figures of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim (Mary's parents), surrounded by women caring for the newborn and small angels in flight.
