Year: seconda metà del XVII secolo
Current location: Museo Civico Archeologico e d'Arte Sacra Palazzo Corboli
Original location: San Lorenzo a San Francesco
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Oil on canvas, approximately 121 x 145 cm.
The work is paired with another painting by the same artist depicting the Banishment of Hagar. Both scenes tell a well-known story from the Book of Genesis in the Bible.
The work was originally painted for the Church of San Francesco, also known as the Church of San Lorenzo.
Today, the painting is housed in the Civic Museum of Archaeology and Sacred Art in Palazzo Corboli.
The painting depicts the moment when Hagar, Abraham's slave, driven into the desert with her son Ishmael, runs out of water and loses hope of survival.
When all seems lost, an angel sent by God appears to comfort her and save her life, directing her to a nearby spring of water to quench her thirst.
